Description: SS Princess Katheen posted postcard. Some history on SS Princess Katheen: The SS Princess Kathleen was a passenger and freight steamship owned and operated by Canadian Pacific Steamships. She served the coastal communities of British Columbia, Alaska and Washington. Ran aground and sank at Lena Point in Lynn Canal, Alaska on September 7, 1952. The SS Princess Kathleen, owned and operated by Canadian Pacific Steamships, was a passenger and freight steamship that served coastal communities in British Columbia, Alaska, and Washington. She was built in 1924 by John Brown & Co. in Clydebank and launched the following year on her maiden voyage from Glasgow to Vancouver via the Panama Canal. The Princess Kathleen and her sister ship, the Princess Marguerite, replaced the SS Princess Irene and SS Princess Margaret, which had been requisitioned by the British Admiralty during World War I.The Princess Kathleen and Princess Marguerite were designed for the 'triangle service' between Vancouver, Victoria, and Seattle, and quickly became the preferred ships on this route, with a capacity of 1500 passengers, 290 berths, 136 staterooms, a 168-seat dining room, and the ability to carry 30 automobiles. King George VI and Queen Elizabeth even traveled aboard the Princess Kathleen in 1939 en route to Victoria. However, in September 1939, the Royal Canadian Navy requisitioned both the Princess Kathleen and Princess Marguerite for use as troop ships. While Princess Marguerite was lost in action, Princess Kathleen was returned to Canadian Pacific in 1947 and resumed service on the 'triangle service.' But in 1949, due to changing demands and increased automobile traffic, Canadian Pacific transferred her to the Vancouver-Alaska cruise service along the Inside Passage. It was during this assignment that Princess Kathleen ran aground at Lena Point in Alaska's Lynn Canal at low tide in September 1952. The United States Coast Guard was alerted two hours later, and a rescue cutter arrived at 0630. Unfortunately, as the tide rose, her stern became swamped, and all passengers and crew were transferred to lifeboats and ashore before the ship sank stern first. The wreck of Princess Kathleen now sits in approximately - of water and is accessible to divers, but tides and currents in the area are strong. In 2010, a salvage operation recovered of petroleum products from the wreck when a significant threat of a large leak was discovered. The postcard is written on and the card was posted. *Please see the photos for the postcard's condition, and make sure to ask any questions before bidding or purchasing.
