Who shall solve the mystery of this grand and solemn prehistoric monument in the vast solitude of Salisbury Plain? The stones are in the middle of a circular enclosure formed by an earthen bank and ditch about 336 feet in diameter. The outer circle was composed of thirty massive upright roughly squared piers, connected by horizontal imposts forming a dove-tailed connected stone ring 16 feet above ground. Sixteen piers and six top-stones remain in position. Inside this is believed to have been a sort of ellipse, formed by still larger trilithons, but detached. There are a large number of stones which many believe to have composed an inner circle, but still enclosing the ellipse, which, being of quite different geologic formation, must have been brought from a great distance.
