Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Texas elbow bush—elbowbush and stretchberry are its most common other names—is a notable native foundation garden plant tolerating drought and extreme heat, taking well to pruning to shape or limit its height, or to form a hedge. Texas elbow bush provides a pleasant green background to a garden border’s colorful smaller shrubs, perennials, and annuals. This shrub is one of the first to bloom flowering around early February to March in its southern zones (zone 7-10). Though the flowers are small they are clustered on bare branches and are noticeable in the bare winter landscape adding a subtle splash of color. Flowers are also a welcome early source of nectar for native bees when very little else is blooming. Spring leaves have a soft pubescence as the scientific name indicates. As leaves mature the downy hair fades. Mature leaves are an attractive and pleasant green color being some of the first leaves to appear in spring. Branches grow at right angles forming an impenetrable barrier and for this reason make this a great informal or, if pruned, formal hedge. The close resemblance of Texas elbow bush to the non-native privets make Texas elbow bush a desirable non-invasive alternative. Flowers are followed by pea-sized dark blue-black fruits in late spring in the south, summer in northern regions. Though edible the fruit is by no means desirable having a very bitter taste…but birds and other wildlife love the fruit being an important food source for them. Texas elbow bush is dioecious so only female plants bear fruit. If fruit is desired growing at least seven plants will result in a very high probability of at least one plant being male or female in the group. Though tolerant of heat, drought, and preferring alkaline soils, Texas elbow bush makes its best growth with supplemental water and good soils…basic garden conditions will produce attractive plants. Note: If you order more than one lot of one species of seeds, for example, you place two orders of 100 seeds we assume you want 200 seeds and your order will be sent in one seed packet.
