Description: This is an absolutely stunning, complete set with a show stopping presentation and in excellent vintage condition. There are no significant issues that I can see, however you should study the photographs for yourself because they are the ultimate guide to condition. I believe you will agree this is a very well cared for chess set. Don Quixote, The Man of La Mancha, stands tall as the king at 4" tall. The board and storage unit are 19.5" square. Individual squares on the board are about 1.75" sq, 1 11/16" to be exact. He stands by his queen, and is humble bishop/squire Sancho. The rooks are windmills in this phenomenal set. When you open the box there's a very light 'old vintage' smell. Nothing terrible, just worth noting. When the pieces are out and the board is set up and on top there's no noticeable odor at all, it's just the interior. Airing it out would likely do wonders, below the box is only open when you're dealing with the pieces so it's not that big of a deal in my opinion. I have done quite a bit of research on this set and unfortunately have found somewhat conflicting information. I believe it to be made in either Italy or Spain. It was part of a collection of primarily Italian sets (a lot of Nigri) that I acquired from the the estate of an avid chess collector with premium sets. If I had to guess I believe it is a luxury set purchased from Italfama but I simply cannot confirm this. Some resources suggest that the Don Quixote set may be from Spain, but in my (non-expert) opinion this is from Italy. The pieces are incredibly detailed but I cannot also confirm their material - they are comfortably light (not too light) and each appears to be hand brushed with color. I don't believe there are plastic but it's possible - there are clues it may be hand carved but I'm not 100% definite, there are differences between pieces and from pawn to pawn (please see photo of 3 pawns). Hand carved resin perhaps? I do not think they are wood but it's not impossible either. I've had multiple people hold them and everyone isn't quite sure. They're nice, regardless. I'm sorry for the lack of information on this set but once again the photos should be your guide. This is a phenomenal set with phenomenal aesthetic appeal. With 4" inch Kings it's perfect for play, but the black and gold board and Don Quixote theme theme make it perfect for display as well, from a conversation piece in mid-century decor to high-end luxury photo shoots or staging a luxury home. (But please play it as well, this is a great set). I hope it finds the right home. If you would like any more photographs or information, don't hesitate to ask. Shipping will be higher than I'd like because this set is quite large, weighs over 10lb, and we need to package it quite securely to ensure it reaches you in the exact condition you see here. This means an extra large box to ensure that even transport drops will not damage the corners, etc. We hope you understand. If shipping ends up being less than we estimate here you will be refunded the difference. Be sure to check out my other items.
