Sung-Ming Dynasty stucco temple Lokapala head

Description: Sung- Ming Dynasty Lokapala temple guardian head in yellow, this rare and fantastic piece comes from the Pingyao area of China and once protected the front of a temple from evil. The piece is made of earthen stucco with poly chrome colors ,as well as glass eyes.The statue would be well over life size. Dimensions H 13" W 9" and very heavy and delicate . (please note I have 2 more heads from the same group sadly the 4th had been sold ) The last picture in my listing comes from Wikipedia listing of the Shuanglin temple , part of UNESCO's world heritage site. It is unknown where this piece came from but the styling and detail are almost exact. It is situated in the countryside of Qiatou village about 6¨C7 kilometres (3.7¨C4.3 mi) southwest of the ancient city of Pingyao. It is among the many cultural monuments located in the Pingyao, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site inscribed in 1997. The temple is protected by the state administration. Founded in the 6th century, the temple is notable for its collection of more than 2,000 decorated clay statues that are dated to the 12th-19th centuries.[1] Its original name was Zongdu but it was renamed during the Northern Song Dynasty period as Shuanglin. It is nicknamed the museum of coloured sculptures. Most of them are dated to the period of the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties.[2]
