And I thought it would be interesting to mess around with that.” Das fünfte Album der Band – „The Hazards of Love“ – ist nicht nur das erste nach ihrem großen Erfolg “The Crane Wife”, sondern ein geradezu bombastisches Werk, das eine Brücke bauen will zwischen Folk und Metal und eine Geschichte von nahezu biblischen Ausmaßen erzählt. Wäre das Wort nicht negativ besetzt, man könnte es doch ein Konzeptalbum nennen, dieses 17 Songs umfassende Opus, das die Band erneut mit ihrem langjährigen Produzenten Tucker Martine einspielte. Dabei wurde das Quintett um Colin Meloy von namhaften Kollegen wie z.B. Becky Stark von Lavender Diamond, Shara Worden von My Brightest Diamond und Jim James von My Morning Jacket unterstützt. Erzählungen in Songs einzubringen ist The Decemberists nicht ganz fremd. Bereits 2004 veröffentlichten sie die achtzehnminütige Single „The Train“, das auf einem irischen Märchen basiert und auch bei „The Crane Wife“ gibt es drei aufeinander aufbauende Stücke, die auf einer japanischen Volkssage basieren. Dieses Experiment führt Meloy nun weiter fort “I wanted to continue to experiment with songs with longer, extended themes. This album is really an expansion of the ideas from the earlier stuff.” Die Geschichte, die das Album erzählt, erklärt Meloy in ein paar Worten: „ The Hazards Of Love tells the tale of a woman named Margaret who is ravaged by a shape-shifting animal; her lover, William; a forest queen; and a cold-blooded, lascivious rake, who recounts with spine-tingling ease how he came “to be living so easy and free”.“ Erstaunlich ist auch, dass „The Hazards of Love“ musikalisch ebenso überwältigt, wenn man nicht genau auf die Erzählungen achtet. Meloy erklärt das so: „It’s a rock record—you’re supposed to fill in the blanks a little. There should be stuff that’s more abstract and left to interpretation. So you can come to it without knowing the narrative, or you can pull out the lyric sheet and try pull it all together.” “This album is the apotheosis of my obsession with British folk songs,” sagt er abschließend. “I’ve been toying with it for so long, I really needed to get this done.
