THE DOG IN THE MANGER By WALTER HUNT IN THE TATE GALLERY, LONDON The Landseer tradition is not yet completely lost and to many he is still the beau-ideal of animal painters. To such the work of the present generation is never realised: the glamour of the great mid-Victorian still forbids them to recognise merit in the animal pictures executed subsequently to "The Distinguished Member of the Humane Society" or "Dignity and Impudence." They acknowledge no other worker in the domain of painting who ventures to portray animals and their doings to Landseer alone is accorded their homage and admiration. The result is that the animal painter of to-'day has not only to contend with the difficulties that are common to all artists, but has the additional force of this prejudice to reckon with. Let it be said at once, without any belittling of Landseer's technical skill that since his day there has been produced much work in the way of animal-painting that is far more conscientious, far more honest than his, and withal of equal excellence technically. There are animal painters who can paint animals—dogs, horses, what you will—in a manner that is beyond criticism from the technical point of view, and can, a [a Landseer, make them suggest a story without losing in the least their animal character, thereby accomplishing something that Landseer often failed to do. Mr. Hunt's "Dog in the Manger" is a case in point. Here is humour of a quietly suggestive kind, an incident in the animal world that might be a record of fact, there are technical excellences that are apparent to every one—but his calves retain their bovine character and the sleeping puppy, oblivious of his share in the incident, has no suggestion of anything but puppyhood. And so in all his work Mr. Hunt reveals his study of animal form and character—a study which he has adhered to from the time when he was thirteen and sold his first Picture. It was in 1885 that "The Dog in the Manger" was exhibited at the Royal Academy and purchased from there by the Chantrey Trustees, while other pictures in the Sunderland and Melbourne Galleries, testify to the official appreciation that has been bestowed upon his work.
