Description: Hi! You're looking at a SUPERB condition book which is OUT OF PRINT and a fascinating history of the Pirates of the 18th Century in the Caribbean West Indies written by GEORGE WOODBURY--the book is a HARDCOVER with the ORIGINAL DUSTJACKET; it's NOT a remainder copy with no price on the front inner flap. This book is in SUPERB condition and has very light browning of the book's pages and NO other significant flaws; the dustjacket is protected by a mylar plastic sleeve which is NOT attached to the boards (it's NOT a former library copy) and has light sunning (fading) on the spine edge, very light dings and a couple of tiny tears and dings on the spine tips, a slight sticker shadow on the upper right of the front inner flap and just slight shelfwear otherwise but NO other significant flaws! The book is titled The Great Days of Piracy in the West Indies and it was written by GEORGE WOODBURY; it was published by W. W. Norton & Company, Inc. in 1951 and is a book club edition. This is the story of the few years near the beginning of the eighteenth century when conditions combined ot make piracy necessary and, to a degree, flourishing. George Woodbury here looks behind the fierce mustaches and baleful frowns of the parsons' villains who later became the romancers' heroes.Among the facets of this fabulous world that the author reviews are such subjects as: Is there any evidence to support the tales of buried treasure? Was walking the plank actually practiced? Did pirates sing harmony? What effect did the green turtle have on piracy? How did pirate agreements resemble democratic constitutions? Why were women able to pass as men on cramped pirate ships? How did pirates fight their ships--and how good were they at it? Why were there no Dutch pirates? The history of piracy at its peak is in this book.A fantastic find, and a beautiful copy of this book! Thanks for looking, and good luck if you're bidding!
