Description: British Parliament 1925 Vintage Lithograph Vintage Historical Map Print Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE This print shows Abraham Ortelius' 1584 map of the Holy Land, the only one of his maps of the region based on contemporaneous travelers' reports. It is also one of the most beautifully engraved maps of the Holy Land produced in the 16th century, with a dramatic depiction in the lower left of Jonah and the Whale, and the medallions decorating the cartouche with scenes of the Nativity, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection. This eastern-oriented map traces the coastline from Beirut and the mountains of Lebanon to Gaza and the Seir mountains. It reaches as far east as the Wadi el-Mujib, here marked as Arnon Torrens (Biblically, the geographical separation of Moab from the tribes of Reuben and Gad). The map features a prominent Dead Sea and a Sea of Galilee. Mountains are indicated pictorially. Cities and regional names are predominantly Biblical, naming the Tribes of Judaea. --- Abraham Ortelius (April 14, 1527 - June 28, 1598) also known as Ortels, was a cartographer, geographer, and cosmographer of Brabant, active in Antwerp. He was the creator of the first modern atlas, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum and is a seminal figure in the history of cartography. Along with Gerard Mercator and Gemma Frisius, he was a founder of the Netherlandish school of cartography. --- The vintage 1965 print offered here depicts a map that was engraved for inclusion in the 1584 edition of Abraham Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
