This volume covers mainly mythology (in the form of translated texts of myths, with some consideration given to variant versions), religion, and the life-cycle. Reichel-Dolmatoff emphasizes the pervasive role of religion in the society, and its impact upon personality development. But even more fundamental are the two major themes which influence and are manifested in each of these cultural dimensions - namely, food and sex. In the concluding chapter a general psychocultural interpretation of Kogi life is presented through an analysis of the focal conflicts relating to food, sex, and associated patterns of aggression. The appendix includes a quite interesting and useful discussion of the author's field research methods and problems. In summary, this is a good detailed, descriptive ethnography of a strikingly distinctive and unsual people and culture. Comparative psychologists as well as anthropologists will find a fascinating body of data.
