Description: Two ideologically divergent Supreme Court Justices are assassinated. The murders intrigue a young law student, Darby Shaw, who researches the two Justices. She realizes that, despite their status as ideological opposites, the two slain justices had a single characteristic in common: a history of environmentalism. The result of her research is contained in a summary that comes to be known as the Pelican Brief, in which she suggests that the murders were financially, rather than politically, motivated. She shows the brief to her law professor who sends it to an FBI contact and then is killed by a car bomb soon afterwards. Afraid that she is the next target, Shaw goes on the run. After an FBI contact is also murdered, she witnesses the death of the assassin. She is then aided by a reporter and, together, they expose the truth. A film adaptation of the novel starring Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington was released in 1993.
