THREE Cleveland Ohio Stiles Patent Recherche Ware Horseshoe Jugs ca 1892-1900

Description: Here are THREE unusual American stone ware jugs made in the style of a Horseshoe...the larger one measures 10.75 in. H to the top of the handle x 8-1/2" L x 5-1/8” W….the medium one measures about 8.75 in. H x 6.75” L x 4.25” W …the smaller one measures 7.5 in. H to the top of the handle, 5.75” L and 3.5” W…..beautiful pieces of earthenware pottery... Weight, Set, unpacked: 9 lbs., 10 oz. All in Excellent Used Condition….please see photos and closeups….there is a bit of wear at spouts on (2) jugs. Else, excellent all around. Horseshoe-shaped Recherche Ware jugs with the Henry Stiles patent spout. Cleveland, Ohio inventor Henry Stiles' 1892 patent was for a new "spout for cans" -- but a few years later he applied for a second patent, extolling the virtues of it in ceramic jugs. (This next part quoted from an online article about Stiles & Recherche Ware): "Sometime during the period 1892-1898, Stiles' invention found a home with the Cleveland Pottery Company. The firm dated from the 1870s, producing both earthenware and stoneware products. Citing Stiles' first patent while adapting the spout, the firm marketed a ceramic jug in quart and half-gallon sizes that they called "Stiles Patent Recherche Ware". The use of the French word "recherche" suggests that the company was implying that the design of this unusual stoneware container had roots in the "art nouveau" movement then sweeping Europe and America.
