Description: This is PHILATELIC PAGE featuring Vintage JOHN WEBBER ARTIST with OFFERING POSTAGE STAMP from 1978 commemorating "CAPTAIN COOK DISCOVERS HAWAII" Captain James Cook lands at Waimea Bay on the island of Kauaʻi, becoming the first European to make contact with the Hawaiian Islands. Cook names the archipelago the “Sandwich Islands” after the Earl of Sandwich. A year later, Cook is killed at Kealakekua Bay on the island of Hawaiʻi Captain Cook discovered Hawaii in 1778, but Juan Gaetano, a Spanish explorer, may have actually discovered Hawaii all the way back in 1555. Some experts even believe that Cook found Hawaii with the assistance of a 200-year-old Spanish map. Cook and his compatriots were welcomed as gods and for the next month exploited the Hawaiians' good will. However, Cook's arrival brought with it infectious diseases that devastated the Native Hawaiian population. And, after one of the crewmen died, exposing the Europeans as mere mortals, relations became strained Cook, in fact, was killed by an angry mob after a Hawaiian chief was shot and killed. According to the docent, Cook's crewmen retaliated by picking up a barrel of water infested with mosquito larvae and dumping it in the river. February 14, 1779 In fairness to the Hawaiians, Cook had been trying to kidnap their king on February 14, 1779, when he and his men were chased back to the beach. The Hawaiians genuinely respected Cook as an adversary, so after murdering him they roasted and hacked the flesh from his bones and, according to some accounts, ate it.
