Description: For sale today is the rare and out-of-print (oop) Fanfare/Ponent Mon english manga trade paperback (tpb)/graphic novel The Time of Botchan (Volume 1/First Volume) by Jiro Taniguchi, published in 2005.Based on the book "Meiji kenken hikyu roku" by Seigai Ota. Adapted by Natsuo Sekigawa and Jiro Taniguchi.The Meiji era (1868-1912) was probably the most defining period in Japanese history. It was a time of massive change from the more traditional Tokugawa era to a positioning of Japan in the modern world. Contemporary writer, Soseki Natsume, suffered due to all the social and cultural changes, and expressed his feelings through his character Botchan, a classic in the vein of Mark Twain and Charles Dickens. The script explores the period through an adult point-of-view, whilst the art by Taniguchi portrays the material with exquisite and elegant detail. I am not a comics grader, but I try to be as thorough as possible when assessing books for any flaws. I don't believe in using a number grade system - to me they are mostly utilized as a method to be ambiguous about exact condition and/or individual imperfections - but I do attempt to describe anything other than minor cover shelf-scuffing/scratching in detail. If a certain flaw discussed below does not mention that it affects inside pages, then it does not. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This copy is in very good overall condition, with a solid spine, excellent/bright inside pages (photo#12 example), and minor levels of shelf-scuffing/scratching. It has few and lesser signs of primarily external wear. **Photo#3: -Upper spine corner: Light scuffing. **Photo#4: -Lower spine corner: Minimal wear to corner itself, small/light scratch/indent on the edge nearby the lower corner. **Photo#5: -Front cover top edge: Tiny dinging/depressions from its middle to the spine corner that show as light depressions on ~8 pages, otherwise light if any shelf-wear.-Outer corner: Tiny/light scuff/bend. **Photo#6:-Front cover bottom edge: Small scuff near its middle that shows lightly on ~6 pages, otherwise light if any shelf-wear.-Outer corner: Tiny scuff/bend, goes lightly thru ~4 pages. **Photo#7: -Back cover top edge: Tiny scuff near its middle, a few light depressions from there to its spine corner (photo#9 w/illumination), otherwise light if any shelf-wear.-Outer corner: Tiny scuff/indent/bend, goes thru 2 pages as a corner fold, and ~1/2 pages as a light bend. **Photo#8:-Back cover bottom edge: 2 tiny scuffs near its middle that show lightly on ~3 pages, otherwise light if any shelf-wear.-Outer corner: Tiny scuff/indent/bend, goes thru ~1/3 pages mostly as a light bend. **Additionally: Front cover has a small indent/scratch near the spine edge (photo#10 w/illumination). Back cover has a small/light sticker residue patch near its bottom outer corner (photo#11 w/illumination, might come off; I prefer not to mess with them). Light vertical scuff/depression spanning the cover's height near its middle (photo#9) that causes a light bend/flex/curl to the book at that location.
