He graduated from Haverford College with a degree in music in 1956; he met his long-time partner, diplomat James E. Baker, at Haverford. He was an editor with W. W. Norton, Downe Publishing, and the Franklin Library. He also earned a master's of social work and practiced as a psychotherapist. Hawkins died of lung disease in 2013.
