Description: Trachycarpus fortunei is an evergreen palm tree in the Arecaceae family. Its native range is from south-central China to northern Myanmar but is not exactly known. Familiar names include Chinese Fan Palm, Chusan Palm, and Windmill Palm. The leaves have been used for thousands of years to make rope, strong cloth, and sacks by the Chinese and Japanese people. It is one of the hardiest palms and can tolerate cold winters as well as moist summers. It can grow in the mountains, along the coast, and inland. It has been given the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. This is an all-around good palm for anyone to start with. It can grow to 60 feet tall but is usually seen around 10-20 feet tall. The leaves are 50-80 inches long rounded and fibrous with 2 rows of spines. The yellow flowers are male and the greenish flowers are female and are on a panicle over 3 feet long. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade with average water needs. Birds, bees, and butterflies are attracted to it. Zones 7-11 Germination Soak seeds in warm water for 5 days. Remove black outer coated revealing the brown coat. Soak seeds for another 3 days. Sow seeds 1/2" deep and cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Keep temperatures around 60-70F. Germination is in 14-60 days.
