Train Sounds On CD - Sounds of Railroads And Railroaders

Description: For video previews and samples of our CDs, check out our website at DivergingClearProductions.com Sounds Of Railroads And Railroaders This is a unique offering in the field of railroad sound recordings. The sounds of trains are here of course, but these are joined by the sounds of the men that make it all happen. Mostly through radio traffic, we get a different sound picture as railroaders work with the tools of their vocation. **** NOTE **** Track Five contains some “colorful” language from one of the railroaders involved in the proceedings. Track Listing From Liner Notes Prior to Amtrak’s “City of New Orleans” (trains 58 and 59) being equipped with Superliners in 1994, the train carried a connection section for St. Louis and Kansas City called “The River Cities” (trains 358 and 359). This section was switched in and out at Carbondale, Illinois. The first series of recordings was made while these switching moves were being made in 1992. Track 1 - The “City of New Orleans” is in Carbondale, and switching moves begin as the locomotives, baggage car, and a Horizon coach are cut away from the train and pull ahead. After a switch is thrown, they back onto a siding between the two main tracks and couple up to the equipment of the following afternoon’s Illini, which was parked overnight on the “Rock Track.” Track 2 - After coupling to the Illini’s equipment, the cars are shoved back a car length. The locomotives and baggage car then cut away and pull into the clear for the arrival of “The River Cities.” Track 3 - “The River Cities” is running late tonight, having arrived after “The City of New Orleans.” As the track opens, 359 pulls down track 2 and past a crossover switch. 359’s single engine and coach then back through the crossover and couple onto 59’s train on track 1. After the coupling is made, 359’s engine cuts off and pulls into the clear on track 2. 59’s locomotives and baggage car then back down and couple onto the train. Once the train is back together, head-end-power restored and a brake test finished, the southbound “City of New Orleans” departs Carbondale on its southbound journey to New Orleans. As the train leaves, the carman is heard getting in his truck and heading back to the yard. Track 4 - A few nights later, switching work is finished as “The City of New Orleans” heads southbound out of Carbondale. Track 5 - We went back for another recording session a few months later, and were set up in plenty of time for “The City of New Orleans” to arrive in Carbondale. 45 minutes of tape was edited down to just over 16 minutes. Once again, the crew and carmen go through the process of switching a coach out of 59 and adding 359’s car to the train. On this night however, things are a little more colorful. While making a coupling, the knuckles jam together on the first attempt. On the second, the drawbars cross each other. Again, this track gets colorful. Track 6 - After the action in track 5, “The City of New Orleans” highballs out of Carbondale. Moments later, 359’s engine heads light toward the yard north of town. Track 7 - On the former Illinois Central, Canadian National’s Benton Local is waiting for authority to leave the mainline and take to the Eldorado Subdivision to head east from DuQuoin to Benton. After a coal train clears up a track warrant, the dispatcher give a warrant to the local. Track 8 - At a location a DuQuoin known as Goddard on the railroad, the Benton Local is switching an industry. The power is a single GP38-2, and we hear the locomotive responding to the crew’s direction over the radio as switching moves are made. Track 9 - At Union Station in Indianapolis, Indiana, is a control point called “CPIU.” CSX’s “IC” dispatcher is in control here, as a pair of freights meet at the interlocking. Track 10 - Amtrak train number 50, the eastbound “Cardinal” from Chicago to Washington, arrives in Indianapolis. Shortly after 50 stops, the IC dispatcher talks to a set of light engines about problems with an interlocking west of the station. Track 11 - Cars have been cut off from the Cardinal, and the head-end-power is brought up. After a brake test, the dispatcher is called for authority to depart. On getting the signal, “The Cardinal” departs. Its next stop will be Connorsville, Indiana.
