The main features of the tank were a centrally mounted turret containing a 76.2mm gun and two MG, a driver's compartment at the front with a hull MG position to the left of the driver and a rear mounted diesel engine. The wide tracks helped to reduce ground pressure and the vehicle had good armour protection. The KV-1 Model 1942 "Simplified Turret" was a later variant of the KV-1, known as the KV-1C with thicker armour, a cast turret, an improved engine, a better 76mm Zis-5 gun and a simplified design. At the time of the German invasion of the Soviet Union, 500 KV were in service. Although eventually outclassed by the Tiger I in 1942, the KV was subsequently redesigned to house an 85mm gun in the KV-85.
