Akasaka Tsuba were crafted in the Akasaka area of Edo from the early to mid-Edo period and were highly popular among samurai. Made of sturdy iron, this tsuba is both durable and lightweight, thanks to the openwork, combining beauty with functionality. The design on this Tsuba features “Mukaizuru,” or opposing cranes. This motif, with two cranes facing each other, is considered auspicious, symbolizing longevity and prosperity in Japanese culture. For samurai, it held additional meaning, representing a wish for protection and peace on the battlefield. The symmetrical arrangement and finely detailed carving of the cranes give this tsuba an elegant yet powerful appearance, achieving a harmonious overall design. The craftsmanship of the Akasaka school is evident in the delicate balance of aesthetics and utility in this exquisite piece. This inscription is by Hino Shōan, who served as the head clerk of the sword dealer "Amiya," which operated from the Edo period to the Meiji period. An inscription by a figure like Hino Shōan is a valuable testament to the history and quality of the sword. His expertise in evaluating swords as the head clerk of Amiya lends significant credibility to the authentication and valuation of the sword, making it an essential piece of evidence for collectors and researchers today.
