From 1919 through 1924, the Ukrainian Republican Choir, led by the outstanding conductor Oleksandr Koshyts, gave more than 600 concerts in world music centers, presenting Ukrainian culture. The gem of the choir’s repertoire was the Shchedryk Carol, which on 5 October 1922 was performed in Carnegie Hall – the most prestigious concert venue in New York. Over time, the American conductor of Ukrainian origin Peter J. Wilhousky wrote a new text of the Shchedryk Carol and adapted its melody for symphony orchestras. This is how the Carol of the Bells was created, which, thanks to its melody, resembling the jingling of bells, has become one of the most popular Christmas songs worldwide.Obverses: beneath are the coins’ issue year 20 / 23, Ukraine’s small coat of arms, the legend УКРАЇНА (Ukraine), the face value 10 and the graphic symbol of the hryvnia; two coins feature lines from the Shchedryk Carol and the Carol of the Bells in Ukrainian and English; above the legends are the mint mark of the NBU’s Banknote Printing and Minting Works, the fine weight of each coin and the metal and its fineness Ag 999 / 31.1; in the center of two coins are angels symbolizing purity, strength, God’s help, protection, and the light of Christmas holidays; above the angels are the legends ТРІУМФ “ЩЕДРИКА” and TRIUMPHANT CAROL OF THE BELLS; the central coin depicts a nativity scene with a Christmas star (with local gilding as a decorative element) – a cultural phenomenon that preserves deep historical traditions in Ukraine.Reverses: the reverses of two coins bear stylized flags of Ukraine and the United States (with pad printing as a decorative element) and compositions consisting of historical religious buildings in Kyiv and New York (beneath); there is also a golden lace background with bells, symbolizing the filling of space with the magical sounds of the carol (with local gilding as a decorative element); the central coin features a stylized composition of a choir performing the carol under the direction of a conductor; above the choir is a silhouette of a swallow – the central character of the carol; under the composition is sheet music showing the initial notes of the melody; beneath are the following legends: ПЕРШЕ ВИКОНАННЯ “ЩЕДРИКА” У КАРНЕҐІ-ХОЛІ ПІД ОРУДОЮ / ДИРИГЕНТА ОЛЕКСАНДРА КОШИЦЯ / 1922 (the first performance of the Shchedryk Carol in Carnegie Hall led by the conductor Oleksandr Koshyts / 1922).Painter: Volodymyr Taran, Oleksandr Kharuk, Serhii KharukSculptor: Volodymyr Demianenko, Anatolii DemianenkoCoins in circulation (planned/actual): up to 5000/5000 Mass, g: 93.3
