ULTRA RARE Klickitat WA orginal Holmes family Sawmill railroad photo album 105

Description: ULTRA RARE Klickitat WA Wasington orginal Holmes family Sawmill album, Begun 1909 and photos go up to the end of 1919 approx. At the bottom I am going to copy and paste all the info about this mill and the Holmes family who started it and basically the town of Klickitat. First, general information on what is in all this batch. I have sold a few out of and was able to remove successfully from the album, even with being glued in. Just using distilled water and it is like reversing the creation of the photo in a darkroom. But I am selling as they are. if I go to the trouble of removing the photos etc I would go ahead and sell individually for what could be much more. This is rare and from a families personal photo album. I have tried to locate relatives today of the Holmes but never found them. There are a lot of family related items in the album not associated with the mill. It is a high price, I know. But these are very rare and one of a kinds , I would say 99% of. It is either 104 or 105 total, Im not going to count again. This is not for a casual collector. This is a museum level of item with all the rarity of cards-photos end information that really gives a first hand account of what they went through for 13 years with fires and upgrades and their own railroad, in fact the #1 Shay and their donkey at the top. At the same time showing the growth of the town, as they also owned the townsite. Company town is right ! So starting out on the various items and scenes. Be sure to zoom in on each photo to see all. In 1909 they started out and went for the Western Yellow Pine that was at the top of Snyder Canyon. Probably pretty rough going at first using the first Donkey and later getting their own first Shay locomotive. Multiple photos on it, and probably worth the higher price on these. I have seen 1964 slide or photo go for up to $200, and these are 50+ years earlier. Detailed photos on the hydraulics running the incline to and from the lower mill pond and upper. First school built fishing trips on klickitat trips to Mt Adams and Trout lake/glenwood with a photo of the first wood bridge over trout laketrip to Ice Caves and to Appleton and camping on the lava fields. Oh, and Guler Hotel wagon mill pond frozen over so playing hockey and snowed over photos of very large piles of lumber ready for shipping and moving through the ponds, planers and on loading docks for the main railroad. lower mills and upper and lower planers including while under construction loaded railcars First homes of the Holmes rail inclines and new mills after fires, many detailed photos of the aftermath of their fires and rebuidling. They also had a Shay on top hauling logs Some of the earliest photos of what would be downtown Klickitat and also when it was Wright. The very first post office and very first library. Workers rooming house and the first hotel with interior photo. First depot and new updated. Playground behind the post office. Large full photos of entire mill, upper mill pond work and then finally filling with water. lower Planer photos with issues and wood backing up At the finisher by the loading docks Hocking Valley Railroad Holmes kids playing in stacks of wood. lots of aerial photos taken from up the hills Some of the fire damage was detailed with so much metal equipment shown destroyed. I wonder if anywas saved. A VERY even more rare large photo. T.G. Boggs Lumber where the Holmes bought all their product. It probably helped them while rebuidling after fires. On the back of that sheet is Mr Boggs in his buggy at his orchards in White Salmon. I believe this mill was a few miles NW of Klickitat Loading carts large trees for the incline early photo of cutting yellow pine Photos of Western Pine Lumber Company and commissary and offices Did I mention the first ever photo of the library Some of the photos with dates show overlapping of using Wright or Klickitat as the signs name for the town. Including in winter, downtown Klickitat under snow AND SO MUCH MORE. I will just end now and see what happens with this. The shipping costs will include insurance and certified mail etc that is mandatoryat a higher level. FIRST MILL IN 1909 The first sawmill at Klickitat (Wright) was built in the fall of 1909 by the Western Pine Lumber Co., formed earlier that year by James W. Holmes and his brothers, Harrison P. and Charles P., and Max Houser of Portland. The mill was located in Snyder Canyon, a little above the present dam which forms the log pond. It was referred to as a "dry log mill" and received its logs by means of an inclined railway constructed on the steep hillside immediately behind the mill. Logging was done on the plateau above the canyon, where in those days grew one of the finest stands of western yellow pine in the area. At the head of the inclined railway was located a donkey engine which pulled the empty cars uphill and lowered loaded cars to the mill below. The operation was regarded as quite successful. The mill was put in an operation early in 1910 and a planing mill was added to the operation. However, in June of 1911, the planing mill was destroyed by fire and a month later the sawmill burned. Both were rebuilt at once. In 1914 a dam was built across the canyon to provide a mill pond. In 1916 Fred A. Bennett finished construction of the Klickitat Northern Railroad, to bring timber from upriver to the mill. This railroad was later bought by the Western Pine Lumber Co. and was renamed the Western Pine Lumber Co. Railroad in 1918. Still later the name was changed to Klickitat Log and Lumber Co.In 1918 the sawmill burned to the ground. Plans were immediately made for its rebuilding as a band mill and the new mill was operating again in 1919. In 1922 the Western Pine Lumber Co. was purchased from its original owners by the J. Neils Lumber Company OR BEST OFFER
