Description: Beautifully ornate handles grace these spoons which I assume were for the Navy Officers' Mess. It's a very attractive pattern featuring a shell and an anchor on the handle's front, and the opposite side of the shell with "USN" are on the back -- with everything surrounded by fancy scrolling. The large, serving spoons are also decorated on the heels of the bowls. All but one of these were made by International Silver. The one that wasn't is not marked by a maker and it's of lesser quality, as evidenced by the wear to its silver. In 1943 the specification for military cutlery was changed from tin plating to silver plating. After only one year, the specification changed to corrosion-resistant steel. Three of these spoons (the three teaspoons) are silver over steel. The larger spoons do not attract a magnet, so I think they're probably the "white metal" that was ordinarily used for silverplate. Except for the one non-International Silver spoon, these are in very good condition with only a few spots of silver loss in the bowls of the serving spoons. (See photos.)
