Given this, that this watch is more than 60 years old and considering the movement's unknown service history a complete overhaul is likely long overdue and recommended.***********This seldom seen vintage 1950's Gruen has an originally white "SWISS" only signed dial that over the past several decades has aged to a lovely peach hue. The original lume on the dial and hands, which no longer glows after being exposed to bright light, has aged gracefully. The metal hands show oxidation. The chrome-plated case shows honest wear and brassing. The outside of the case back is stamped "GRUEN AUTOMATIC || WATERPROOF || SHOCK RESISTANT || ANTI MAGNETIC" with "STAINLESS STEEL BACK" followed by "GRUEN WATCH Co,""580 SS" and "MADE IN FRANCE" stamped on the inside of the case back. The crystal needs to be replaced as it is cracked along the edge from approximately 5 to 6 o'clock. The 17 jewels unadjusted Swiss "GRUEN WATCH Co" and "580 SS" stamped Felsa 4000 automatic movement is clean, runs strong and keeps accurate time. After recently winding the non-screwdown crown 39 full revolutions the movement had a solid power reserve of approximately 43 hours. This crown winds smoothly. The movement is a bit loose in the case as it makes a slight sound when the watch is turned upside down and then back upright. Additionally when the watch is gently moved in a circular motion the oscillating weight can be heard. Given this, that this watch is more than 60 years old and considering the movement's unknown service history (there are a few visible watchmaker service markings on the inside of the case back) a complete overhaul is likely long overdue and recommended. This watch measures approximately 33 mm without the crown, approximately 35 mm including the crown and approximately 18 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the mid-case, is approximately 7 mm. Including the crystal case thickness measures approximately 10.5 mm. Given that the movement is a bit loose, that the oscillating weight can be heard and considering the movement's unknown service history a complete overhaul is recommended.
