The ball a lime-yellow (like Mt. Dew color). Imprinted on the ball are three dots: a black dot sports the familiar American Broadcasting Company logo; a golden yellow dot contains the word "happy" in black; and a fluorescent orange dot has the word "hour" in black ink. These three dots are on both sides of the ball. The dots are 11/16" in diameter. This ball was a promotional item by McDonald's (yes, the Ronald McDonald restaurant) for the ABC Television Network from September through October 2002. What is "ABC Happy Hour"? At the start of the fall 2002 television season, the ABC Television Network attempted to pull itself out of third place in the ratings. McDonald's Corp. helped to heavily promote ABC's 8-to-9 p.m. time slot, which the network called the "Happy Hour." By teaming up with McDonald's, ABC tried to align itself with the fast-food giant's strategy of offering non-threatening, middle-of-the-road fare in hopes of appealing to the broadest possible audience. Happy Hour was promoted on McDonald's tray liners, which had the Happy Hour programming schedule; posters; signs in the drive-through windows, bags, and other items like antenna balls. (Info gleaned from a Washington Post article 'One $30 Million Happy Meal to Go' from September 9, 2002) A terrific piece of network television, or McDonald's, memorabilia.
