It was a copy in marble of the original , a lost Greek sculpture created in the 3rd century bce. It is called 'The Uffizi Wrestlers' because it was acquired by and now sits in the Uffizi Collection in Florence Italy. The wrestlers are engaged in a sport called 'Pankration' , a sport very much like the 'Mixed Martial Arts' of today. An often reproduced image of great popularity it is a classic of ancient sculpture and has been attributed variously to Myron , Cephisodotus the Younger or Heliodorus. The physical strength required in the activity is evidenced by the graphic muscularity the wrestlers exhibit. The raw action of conflict as sport makes this sculpture a metaphor for life. The tension in the sinews is great - that gives the piece movement and a sense of weight which a lot of reproductions of 'The Uffizi Wrestlers' lack . The pose here is not 'static' - it has a spark. It plays beautifully off the black granite base straddling Classical and Modern - the black oval base lends a touch of Mud-Century to it. It's a beautiful piece .
