Description: Includes an ancient road map of the eastern third of the Commonwalth of Virginia (the area east of the fall line, from Alexandria to Petersburg, to the Chesapeake Bay & Atlantic Coast), on a map from AAA, entitled “Tidewater Virginia by Motor”, from 1940, a time when Virginia was still a profoundly southern state, a mostly rural area of small towns & tobacco farms, run by the Byrd political machine. Features a map of coastal Virginia, along with a quick guide to the area’s many points of interest (Alexandria, Mt. Vernon, Fredericksburg, Richmond, Jamestown/Williamsburg/Yorktown, Newport News/Norfolk/Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Wakefield/Stratford) and to the Bridges of the James River. This was from a time before the construction of a lot of the bridges that connect coastal Virginia (the Chesapeake Bay Bridge & Tunnel, the Hampton Roads Bridge & Tunnel and the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge & Tunnel were yet to be built). There is another map of the Hampton Roads area, which would be utterly transformed a few years later by World War II. At this point (83 years ago), it was a shipbuilding center and port area, with Norfolk (145,000 residents), Portsmouth (45,000) and Newport News (37,000) as its core. Hampton, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Suffolk were still mostly rural counties. The James River Bridge, connecting Newport News with Isle of Wight County, is featured prominently, as it was the longest bridge over water at the time (4.5 miles across), and the only bridge crossing below Richmond (75 miles upstream). There is also a vintage official guidebook for Colonial Williamsburg, the centerpiece of Virginia’s Historic Triangle (with Jamestown on one side & Yorktown on the other, connected by the idyllic 23-mile Colonial Parkway) (from Colonial Williamsburg, Inc.,1965).
