Description: Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome. You are looking at a unique and rare early Astatic model D-104 crystal microphone from the 1940's (possibly 1930's) that comes with a slightly newer Atlas DS-10 model desk stand shown. You'll notice right away that while this looks like the newer D-104's of the past 60 years this one has a few differences that are quite obvious. This model was intended to either be mounted to a desk stand from the bottom or it could be used in a ring with springs. This mic had two options and still has the four original hook threads that that would allow you to screw 4 hooks into the side of the mic. It also has more screws in the rear of the mic that hold the inner components together. Astatic eventually changed that design giving the newer D-104 just 8 screws instead of this models 11. You don't see too many of these early D-104's around and rarely ever this nice. It should be noted that the original crystal element was replaced with what appears to be a type of carbon or dynamic element inside but it's non-working. I would recommend using this strictly as a display model due to the unknown working condition. The D-104 was manufactured by Astatic in Youngstown, Ohio and was to be used as a public address mic as it's non-directional. It was a very popular design for this company and they continued to make the single element D-104 model for many decades retaining the same overall style. This D-104 has the early riveted badge and is actually much thicker than the regular D-104. This D-104 also has the shorter built in early chrome lower mechanism where the later models had the F-11 adapter. The cable on this mic actually runs through the rear of the mics lower adapter which then runs through the Atlas DS-10 mic stand. The cable is just 12 inches in length. Soft, pliable and has the Amphenol connector on the end. The polished chrome body of this D-104 has typical scratches but it's free of corrosion or dents. The front grill looks great as does the Astatic badge. I would rate the cosmetic condition a conservative 7 out of 1 - 10. The stand has just a bit more wear but looks consistent. The mic comes with a 1950's Atlas DS-10 "Streamliner" model desk stand and perfect for this vintage microphone. It provides a very stable, attractive lite weight platform. There is typical wear on the painted grey base and riser though the paint is original. There are some deep scratches and paint chips but no dents or fractures. The detachable chrome strip shows lite corrosion. The stand still has all 5 original rubber pads. I'd rate the DS-10 an easy 6 on a scale of 1 - 10. Total height with the D-104 on top of the stand is appx 9 inches high X 5 inches wide X 7 inches deep. A very nice piece that will draw attention anywhere it's shown. If you demand a D-104 that few others have then this is your girl. As with all my vintage microphones for sale... I can promise you will be happy with it for the price paid.
