Description: This unusual large Turkmen (Turkoman) Kulta headpiece was handcrafted during the mid-1900's for the Ersari sub-tribe of Turkmenistan in Central Asia. It is vintage tribal jewelry, not a new reproduction. More measurements are listed at the end of this description. Kulta were worn spanning the forehead, with a pattern of alternating silvertone and red beads across the front. The beads curve to a point in the center, mimicking the arch of the eyebrows. The colorful side panels with charms and upper fabric are both quilted for sturdiness. The upper fabric was traditionally tucked under a veil or other headpiece, so the edges were not hemmed. It would have had 4 to 6 string-ties to secure the kulta in place around the head, but they have gone missing over the years. New ones could be easily sewn on, however. It is also a little smaller than other Kultas in my collection. Sale priced. In very good condition, this old Kulta has age-patina on the charms, along with wear patterns. Some of the charms may be missing or irregular. Please note: the veil in the manikin image is not included with purchase, so sorry.
