Description: Vintage miniature hand-painted clam/oyster shell diorama, made in Japan. This celluloid or possibly shell item is outstanding in the detailed carving and painting. It features an embossed/relief scene on top of two figures, a traditional home, and a tree, against the backdrop of a mountain. Inside the shell are carvings of a waterwheel mill, a pinkish orange flowering tree, a brown cow, and a footbridge. The green lawn is speckled with pink flowers, and a blue creek is spanned by a brown bridge, with gray rocks and a light brown wooden pathway nearby. It is very finely detailed and pretty. The bottom of the shell sits on 2 spiral shell feet. Most sellers describe this item as made of celluloid, but I think it’s hard to say, because it looks to me like it could be real shell. This item was likely made mid-century, when celluloid was more commonly used. Dimensions: 3.5" wide x 2.75" long x 2-1/8" tall. 2.1 oz. Enchanting!
