Vtg Vlchek Tool Kit Open End Wrench Rare EBONY Black Finish 5/8" x 11/16" 1930s

Description: Vintage Vlchek tool kit wrench, carbon steel, double open end, rare "Ebony All Over" black finish, no markings other then the Vlchek V-Shield logo, openings measure about 5/8" x 11/16", about 6" long, made in USA circa 1930s. The lack of any markings other than the logo virtually assures this was made for some kind of vehicle kit or holder set, but extensive searching turned up nothing, so the kit must be quite obscure. Another unusual feature is that the sides and edges of the beam are ground almost flat, whereas every example I've seen of a Vlchek carbon steel wrench are distinctly curved. Nor do the opening sizes correspond to ISN specs. Very unusual. FINISH: This is not Vlchek's standard black thick japanned beam finish with polished end faces for carbon steel wrenches. The finish is so thin that even the tiniest factory grind marks inside the openings can be seen though it (see photos), and the finish is over the entire surface with no polished faces. The finish is also smooth and somewhat shiny, not that kind of powdery texture of a typical black oxide. The only reference to a Vlchek wrench finish like this is cited by Alloy Artifacts from the 1934 catalog as No. 2150 "Ebony All Over." I've not seen another example. Remarkable near-new condition for its age. Original finish is almost fully intact with only the slightest hints of loss from tray rub at the very face edges adjacent to the beam (very hard to see in the photos). Inside of openings look to have never been used mechanically (see photos). An exceptional collector-grade example. Please see our standard used hand tool notes below.
