Description: Logging was one of the major industries that helped put Washington on the map and spurred the economy from its territorial days, into statehood and for many decades afterward. Many Washington communities especially in the timber-laden western half of the state, owe their early existence to logging and related activities. The California Gold Rush exposed the need for a steady, good supply of lumber. Starting in the 1850s, the area around the Puget Sound served this need. For a hundred years, no other industry came close to matching logging in its importance to Washington. Huge trees filled the coastal forest, and no one thought the supply would ever run out. Large Douglas Firs, Spruce, Hemlock, and Cedar trees grew west of the Cascade Range. Some firs grew over 300 feet tall, and some cedars reached 15 feet in diameter. This card, published by “Sprouse and Son, Tacoma”, captures some of the giants cut into useable lumber, “Washington Toothpicks”. It is in good condition with minor wear and a clean, clear image. The reverse is written on and is clean. The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible.
