Description: While best known for his legendary Spirit series and as the Father of the Graphic Novel, Will Eisner for many years, mostly the 1950s/1960s produced and illustrated PS and PM (Preventive Maintenance) magazines for the US Army. A prominent character in his “Joe Dope” comic strips and illustrations—for the then virtually all-male army—was Connie Rodd, the sexy WAC who helped get the attention of GIs trying to figure out a repair or maintenance issue. Featured on this rare original poster art is Connie asking soldiers if they filled out their various “DA” paperwork. Size/condition: Measures 15 x 21.75 inches on heavy Hi-Art Illustration Board. Connie is all original art done on vellum glued to the illustration board. The rubber cement has yellowed after more than a half-century, but the art itself is fine. Some white-out on her pockets. The boring DA forms are originals on the board, with only the oval “DA” & #s being stats. Blue pencil roughs and indications are visible under and around the forms. Will Eisner (1917-2005) is one of the most admired and beloved figures in comics history. An important artist, writer, editor and “packager,” he began his long career as a teenager shortly after the birth of comic books in the mid 1930s. He is is best known as the creator of The Spirit and the modern graphic novel, but also invented Sheena, Queen of the Jungle, Blackhawk, Dollman, and other Golden Age characters. Eisner also pioneered the field of educational comics, both for the U.S. Army and private industry. The annual Will Eisner Awards for excellence in comics, presented annually in San Diego, are named after him. His original art, which does not often appear on eBay, sometimes sells for tens of thousands of dollars at auction.
