Description: [TITANIC] WILLIAM T. STEAD. William T. Stead (1849–1912) was a journalist and assistant editor of the Pall Mall Gazette famous for his anti-vice crusade and founder of The Review of Reviews who drowned in the Titanic disaster. He is widely considered to be the founder of modern journalism. TYPED LETTER SIGNED BY WILLIAM T. STEAD, THE FOUNDER OF MODERN JOURNALISM WHO PERISHED ABOARD THE RMS TITANIC Typed letter signed by “W.T. Stead” refusing to publish an article by the prominent American journalist William L. Alden: “I am awfully sorry, but your article, although very interesting and amusing, and although it might have come in very well if we had the paper running, is hardily quite the thing for a throw off. I hope you will not think for a moment that I do not appreciate your great kindness in trying the experiment, and I am so extremely sorry to have to return you the manuscript, but I really think it would be better. I hope I shall be able to see you at our house before very long, when, if the paper goes, we can have a talk over the question as to the possibility of improvising a series which you can write at your leisure. Again thanking you for your great kindness.” STEAD REFUSES TO PUBLISH AN ARTICLE BY THE PROMINENT AMERICAN JOURNALIST WILLIAM L. ALDEN The letter is one page on The Review of Reviews letterhead, measures 10” by 8”, signed in London on October 5, 1893, and in good condition with dampstaining, spotting, soiling, and evidence of mounting on the verso.
