Description: Stubborn Clay (including a typed manuscript for a poem) Author: DAVIDSON, William Wallace Title: Stubborn Clay (including a typed manuscript for a poem) Publication: Athens, Georgia: The University of Georgia Press, (1948). Edition: First Edition Description: First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo, 43pp. A good copy in red cloth boards and black cloth spine. Some spotting to bottom of the front board and hinges loose. Wonderfully INSCRIBED by Wallace on p. 13 to Dorothy Carlisle (later Montgomery, the wife of Georgia writer and critic Marion Montgomery): "For Dorothy Carlisle, who appeared somewhere in the "high canyons" and made me feel "the stark negation" and more free to rise, whatever "the purpose that the stars intend." - William Wallace Davidson." The fragments in quotation marks refer to lines in the published poem on that page, "The Loneliest Born." Davidson was the lesser-known brother of Fugitive poet Donald Davidson, who was a successful poet and contemporary of John Crowe Ransom and Cleanth Brooks. Laid into the book is a 12-page typed manuscript, folded horizontally and stapled along the top, for a lengthy poem titled "Ting Tong Tee." It's unclear whether the poem was ever published. Some light foxing to a few leaves of the manuscript, but overall in very good condition. While the book is somewhat shaken, it's internally clean, and includes a nice description from Dorothy Carlisle Montgomery on the front free endpaper about the circumstances by which she obtained the book and inscription. A neat, small archive of southern literature at the height of the Agrarian movement. Good.
