Description: Original WW1 (1918) British 'Field Printed' SOMME map dating to the GERMAN SPRING OFFENSIVE A very interesting DOUBLE SIDED British map, both sides of which have been printed in the field six months apart.The original is essentially what would normally be known as a 'Special Sheet'. Such maps were specially produced in order to concentrate on a specific area of interest situated across the boundaries of two or more standard mapping sheets. The area this example covers much of the terrain fought over during the first Battle of The Somme. However, the interest in this area at the time of printing (May 1918) was that the Germans had only just recaptured much of it during Operation Michael. The Allies would take the area back yet again during the Second Battle of The Somme a few months later. Covering an area where four maps meet, this was likely to have been an unused template which was prepared for a succession of overprinted layers in anticipation of further German attacks on the Somme.Six months later, the reverse side has been printed with an 'up to the minute' depiction of the Allied Front Line as the Germans were being rapidly pushed back towards the Belgian border. Even this side of the map appears to have been produced in two stages. Firstly on the 30th September, then overprinted once again with additional details in red on the 2nd November. It's a fascinating map covering two important stages of the War, and it features many well known Battlefield sites such as Albert, Mametz Wood, Thiepval, Pozieres, Montauban, High Wood, Contalmaison, La Boisselle, Bernafay Wood, the Four Gospel Copses, Martinpuich, Courcelette etc. Please see my many other WW1 (and WW2) maps, documents, photos etc. POSTAGE - Will be sent using Royal Mail's Guaranteed Delivery by 1pm Service which will adequately cover the insurance cost of the item.
