WW2 GERMAN TARGET MAP of LONDON (PARLIAMENT, BUCKINGHAM PALACE, ST. PAUL'S etc)

Description: A rare original WW2 German Army map which once formed part of a regional dossier of important military, industrial and municipal establishments. (The upper margin states "Nur für den Dienstgebrauch", which is equivalent to "RESTRICTED" in British military terms). It relates to NORTH WEST LONDON and provides a fantastic overview of the locations which would have been vital targets for invading German ground forces. (The targets are numbered, with their perimeters outlined, and a key in the margin identifies each one specifically. A different reference explains the coloured symbols on the map.) Without a doubt, amongst the most important targets are the HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT and BUCKINGHAM PALACE, but other numbered sites include the WAR OFFICE, HOME OFFICE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD etc. Strangely, despite DOWNING STREET being named on the map, it is not identified as a specific target. The main RAIL NETWORK is heavily emphasised, along with several POWER STATIONS, and the map also features other key landmark sites such as WEMBLEY STADIUM, HYDE PARK, REGENT'S PARK, HAMPSTEAD HEATH, WORMWOOD SCRUBS etc. Produced at a highly detailed scale of 1:20,000. The printing date of May 1942 is shown in the lower right margin with Roman numerals for the month and the year displayed as two digits. A rare and important map in great condition, with a few marks here and there (see photos).
