This power house of modern mainstream piano first established his reputation with a trio of solid albums for Blue Note. Secrets (featuring stunning arrangements by Bob Belden) marks a mighty turning point in Joey's career. Joined by bassist James Genus, drummer Clarence Penn and a large supporting cast (including such notables as Tim Hagans and Fareed Haque) Calderazzo has fashioned his most fully realized effort to date. This listing is for a very rare, out of print audiophile XRCD title - a FACTORY SEALED XRCD PRESSED and ISSUED on the XRCD-24 format. This is a highly collectible title, featuring - Joey CalderazzoXRCD Title - Secrets Features - • Mastered using K2 Technology • Mastered by Tohru Kotetsu at JVC Mastering Center, Japan, 2012 • Directly Recorded to Half Inch Analog Tape Musicians - Joey Calderazzo, pianoTim Ries, soprano saxophone, fluteCharlie Pillow, tenor saxophone, English horn, bass clarinetTim Hagans, trumpet, flugelhornEarl McIntyre, bass trombone, tubaJohn Clark, French hornTomas Ulrich, celloFareed Haque, guitarJames Genus, bassClarence Penn, drums Track Listing - 1. Filles de Kilimanjaro 2. No One Knows I'm Here 3. Aurora 4. Scriabin 5. Echoes 6. Secrets 7. Last Visit Home 8. ATM Album Notes: Recorded at Systems Two, Brooklyn, New York on January 26-27 1995. Includes liner notes by Bill Kohlhaase. All songs written by Joey Calderazzo except "Scriabin" (Vince Mendoza) and "Filles De Kilimanjaro" (Miles Davis). Joey Calderazzo may not have achieved the acclaim of some of the pianists of his generation like Benny Green and Bill Charlap, but he has consistently created CDs that stand the test of time. These 1995 sessions for AudioQuest feature him leading a variety of different ensembles ranging from trios to octets with potent arrangements by Bob Belden. Six of the eight tracks are Calderazzo's compositions, highlighted by the infectious horn lines in his rhythmic "Echoes" and the wistful air of "Last Visit Home." His trio with bassist James Genus and drummer Clarence Penn are afire in his driving "No One Knows Why I'm Here" and the explosive "ATM." Belden's setting of Miles Davis' "Filles de Kilimenjaro" has an exotic air with the addition of guitarist Fareed Haque and Charles Pillow's English horn. This is a rewarding disc that deserves to be more widely known. ~ Ken Dryden The XRCD is from the ultra-rare series of extended range, audiophile XRCD-24 CDs (LONG Out of Print).
